How to Treat Your Pet's Allergies

Puppy Sleeping Near a Sunny Window

Remember that allergies can look a little different in pets than in humans. For example, a food allergy might manifest as scratching and licking, chewing, or biting.  To make your pet more comfortable and healthy, remove allergens from your home.

  • Switch your pet's food, use vinegar instead of chemical cleaning products, and be careful about what you use around your pets.

  • Avoid cedar, which is a known pet allergen. The floor is especially problematic because our pets spend so much time near it. Rinse your floors with water after mopping to remove chemical residue. Once you find a routine that works well, stick to it.

For airborne allergens, consider...

  • Removing carpet, which can harbor dust and dander, among other substances.

  • Keep windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home.

  • An air purifier can also remove allergens from the air, allowing both you and your pet to breathe easier.

  • A low-dust cat litter is also preferable for pets with allergies or asthma.

  • Quit smoking or smoke away from your pet to reduce that chance of a reaction to the smoke.

  • Wipe down your pet's paws when they come inside and take off your shoes as well.

  • Frequent dusting and vacuuming can remove some allergies from your home.

  • Dusting with a damp cloth removes more dust and fur rather than simply displacing the dust and sending it through the air.

More extreme or chronic allergies might require a visit to the veterinarian who can help pinpoint what your pet's allergies are and advise treatments to help improve your pet's quality of life.
